About
Toronto streetfood, though still in its infancy, shows strong potential and has an audience that’s hungry for innovative cheap eats.

The hunt for variety is already ingrained in the local streetfood culture. Blue Donkey’s Greek salads and Rome’n Chariot’s chicken parmesan are perfect examples of the multi-ethnicity and originality already on the menu in Hogtown!

Despite the challenges it faced in 2009, the Toronto A La Cart program demonstrates that there is a desire to cultivate diverse and healthy streetfood. This determination was strengthened in 2012 during the Toronto Street Food Project campaign, supported by vendors and urban foodies alike, who asked the city to relax restrictions on streetfood.

The foodtruck movement is on the rise, and some forty trucks are already on the streets!

And while the foodtruck trend is still gaining momentum in Toronto, streetfood culture has been deeply rooted there for many years, with fastgrabs like Caplansky’s Delicatessen serving eats to go.

About Street Food
Toronto’s dynamism, creativity and colourfulness can be rivaled only by its Streetfood culture.

It is now common knowledge that Streetfood trucks resurfaced in the streets of Toronto after having been banned in 1947. Within a few months, the diversity of the trucks and their quality have reached unprecedented heights, as if they had been roving the streets for years.

Toronto has acquired its reputation as a gastronomic destination thanks to its lifestyle and a festive and friendly atmosphere, and the food trucks quickly become key ambassadors making this reputation even stronger.

From Dim Sum’s dumpling to Landry et Filles’ ployes, not to forget the Pied de Cochon’s foie gras poutine and Grumman’s tacos, there is something for everyone, of all colors and tastes.

Another less known aspect of Toronto’s Streetfood culture is the Counter. Much before the return of the food trucks, the Streetfood culture was alive and well in Toronto thanks to fix venues offering a rich and tasty range of meals which customers could easily consume in the street, while walking or sitting in a park.

These Counters, managed by skilled craftsmen, have been part of the city’s culinary identity for years and shape Torontoers’ daily lives. From coffees, croissants, poutines, sandwiches, smoked meat, pancakes, donuts or 24h bagels, they are just a must!

Long live Streetfood!
